While each new game is different, familiar aesthetics and immaculate writing help make them all feel oddly comforting. Transistor is a beautifully melancholic jaunt through a futuristic cityscape, while Pyre is a fascinating road trip across the afterlife that also happens to be a sick sports game. Although it wouldn’t be impossible to change the underworld to be beyond recognition, it wouldn’t be as exciting again. Until now, and it’s a perfect time to break that rule.Įver since the release of Bastion, every new game from Supergiant has sought to reinvent whatever genre it inhabits, exploring exciting new characters and unexpected ideas with a gorgeous confidence that reached a new crescendo with Hades. 1) A New Setting 2) A New HUB World 3) New Boon Givers 4) Better Rewards 5) Boundless Potential A New Setting While I found the many escape attempts from Hades very enjoyable, the sequel can’t afford to re-tread old ground. Often it’s to wrap up an existing storyline or capitalise upon an existing audience, but Supergiant has always resisted this call towards the familiar. This industry is defined by safe and predictable sequels, reboots, and remakes, so rarely do further escapades into fictional universes feel earned or justified. Supergiant unveiled Hades 2 at The Game Awards last night, taking all of us by surprise. ![]()
